How to Find Your Engine Size (and What Small, Medium and Large Mean)

Engine size decides how much oil your car takes and often which filters fit, so it is the one fact you need before buying a service kit. If you do not know whether your car is a 1.2 or a 1.6, here is how to find out in under a minute.

Option 1: Your V5C logbook

Open the V5C registration certificate and look at section P.1 Cylinder capacity (cc). It gives the exact figure, for example 1598 cc. Round it to one decimal place in litres: 1598 cc is a 1.6, 1998 cc is a 2.0, 998 cc is a 1.0. Section P.3 on the same page tells you the fuel type.

Option 2: The free DVLA vehicle check

Search for "DVLA vehicle enquiry", enter your registration and it shows the engine capacity, fuel type, year and colour from the official record. It takes ten seconds and needs no login.

Option 3: Enter your reg on our site

Type your registration into the box on our homepage and we look it up for you, work out the engine size and show the exact kit and price for your car. You do not need to know the cc at all.

What our Small, Medium and Large sizes mean

  • Small: up to 1.6 litres. City cars, superminis and most small hatchbacks: Fiesta, Corsa, Polo, Yaris, Clio, 208, 1.0 and 1.2 Golfs and Astras.
  • Medium: 1.7 to 2.5 litres. The 2.0 TDI, 2.0 EcoBlue, 2.0 CDTi and 2.0 petrol engines in family cars and SUVs: Golf and Focus diesels, Qashqai, Sportage, Tiguan, BMW 3 Series, Audi A4.
  • Large: 2.6 litres and over. Big six-cylinder cars and 4x4s such as the BMW 530d, Range Rover and Mercedes E350.

The size sets the quantity of oil in the kit (a Medium kit has enough for the deeper sump of a 2.0-litre engine) and the price. The oil grade and the filters themselves are still matched to your exact car from the registration, so a Medium Golf diesel gets Golf diesel parts, not generic ones.

Borderline cases

A few engines sit right on the line. A 1.6 TDI (1598 cc) counts as Small. A 1.7 CRDi (1685 cc) counts as Medium. If your cc figure ends up within 50 cc of a boundary and you are unsure, pick the larger size; a little spare oil is never a problem, running short at the end of a fill is.
