Oil Change Kit vs Standard vs Major Service Kit: Which Do You Need?

Oil Change Kit vs Standard vs Major Service Kit: Which Do You Need?

We keep the range deliberately simple: four kits, each matched to your registration. This guide explains what is in each one, which garage service it corresponds to and how to choose.

The four kits

Oil Change Kit

Fully synthetic engine oil in the correct grade and quantity for your engine, plus the oil filter. This is the interim service: the part of servicing that matters most and needs doing most often. From £59.99.

Basic Filter Kit

Oil filter, air filter and cabin filter with no oil. Choose this if you already have the right oil, or you want to do the filters between oil changes. From £39.99.

Standard Service Kit

Engine oil, oil filter, air filter and cabin filter. This matches the parts in a full service at a garage and it is our most popular kit. From £69.99.

Major Service Kit

Everything in the Standard kit plus the parts that are due less often: a set of spark plugs for petrol engines or a fuel filter for diesels. This is the major service most handbooks call for every two years or every other service. From £109.00.

Prices above are for engines up to 1.6 litres; Medium kits for 1.7 to 2.5-litre engines cost a little more because they contain more oil. See how to find your engine size.

A simple rule for choosing

  • Last service less than a year ago and the car has done under 10,000 miles since? You are not due yet, but an Oil Change Kit is never wasted on a car that does lots of short journeys.
  • Annual service due? Standard Service Kit. Alternate it with the Major kit: Standard one year, Major the next.
  • Two years or 20,000 miles since the plugs or fuel filter were changed, or you simply do not know? Major Service Kit.
  • Just bought a used car with patchy history? Major Service Kit. It resets the clock on every consumable and you know exactly where you stand.

What is not in the kits

Brake fluid, coolant, gearbox oil, wiper blades and bulbs are not included, because they are on different schedules and are easy to buy separately.

Why registration matching matters

Two cars with the same badge can need different oil and filters depending on the year and engine. A 2015 Fiesta 1.0 EcoBoost takes 5W-20 to Ford's own specification; the 1.25 next to it on the forecourt takes 5W-30. We take your registration, look up the exact engine from the DVLA record and pick the parts for that engine, then check the order again by hand before it goes out. If anything does not add up, we email you before dispatch rather than send the wrong parts.

Doing the work

Each part has its own guide in the Help Centre: oil and filter, air filter, cabin filter, spark plugs and diesel fuel filter. A Standard service is about an hour's work; a Major service, two.
